According to Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press on Monday, 24-time grand slam singles champion Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia made tennis history on Monday with his fourth round win over world number 23 Francisco Cerundolo at the 2024 French Open. In beating Cerundolo in a five set thriller, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, Djokovic won his 370th singles match in an ATP grand slam tournament. That is the most singles wins ever, and one more than Roger Federer of Switzerland, who won 369 grand slam singles matches in his remarkable tennis career.

Of Djokovic’s major victories, he has won 103 matches at the Australian Open, 96 French Open matches, 92 Wimbledon matches and 81 United States Open matches. The fact that Djokovic has won his most grand slam matches at the Australian Open should not be that much of a surprise because he has won the tournament there a record 10 times.

In Monday’s win, Djokovic was the better server. He had six aces compared to three for Cerundolo. Djokovic also broke Cerundolo six of 11 times, while Cerundolo broke Djokovic four of 19 times.

Now the biggest question surrounding Djokovic is his overall health. In Monday’s victory he was dealing with some knee issues, where he had to call for the trainer twice. There are rumours that Djokovic may not be fit to play his quarterfinal match against Norway’s Casper Ruud on Wednesday. It does not help matters that Djokovic is coming off two five set thrillers. In addition to beating Cerundolo, he beat Lorenzo Mussetti of Italy, 7-5, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday night/Sunday morning. The match actually ended at 3 am in Paris.
