Ludvig Aberg of Eslov, Sweden leads after the second round of the 2024 United States Open from Pinehurst Number Two Golf Course in Pinehurst, North Carolina. At the midway point of the third major of the 2024 calendar year, Aberg is currently at five-under-par.

In the second round on Friday, Aberg shot a one-under-par 69. He had three birdies and two bogeys. Aberg birdied the second, fifth, and 12th holes, and bogeyed the eighth and 16th holes. Aberg’s score of -1 followed a first round score where he went four-under-par. On Thursday, he had six birdies and two bogeys. Aberg birdied the first, fifth, ninth, 11th, 12th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the sixth and 14th holes.

There is a three-way tie for second place at -4. There you can find Belgian Thomas Detry, American Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California, and 2020 United States Open champion Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California. Three more golfers are at -3 and two strokes back of Aberg. This trio contains American Tony Finau of Salt Lake City, Utah, Matthieu Pavon of France, and four-time grand slam champion Rory McIroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland. McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and the 2014 British Open. Meanwhile, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan is three strokes back of Aberg at -2.

The second round also saw two holes in one. Both aces took place on the ninth hole. In the morning group, Sepp Straka of Vienna, Austria accomplished the feat, and in the afternoon group, 2018 British Open champion Francesco Molinari of Italy made a hole in one, and in doing so made the cut.
